# Neamț Citadel Museum

The fortress on Timuș rock, built by Petru I in the late 14th century and strengthened by Stephen the Great, held out against Sultan Mehmed II's siege in 1476. Today 21 restored rooms are open to visitors.

Built under Petru I (1375–1391) and first recorded on 2 February 1395, the fortress stands at about 480 metres on the Pleșu ridge above Târgu Neamț.

Stephen the Great added the outer court with four bastions and the bridge carried on 11 stone piers. In July 1476 it withstood the siege led by Mehmed II, conqueror of Constantinople.

After restoration in 2007–2008 the museum opened on 4 July 2009, with rooms including the Council and Judgement Hall, the Secret Chamber, the Armoury, St Nicholas Chapel and the Mint.

## Opening hours

Tuesday–Sunday: 10:00–18:00 (April–September), 09:00–17:00 (October–March); extended hours Tuesday–Sunday 09:00–18:00 from 15 May to 31 August; Monday: closed.
